Squirrels or Birds Under Your Solar Panels?

That scratching over your ceiling and the debris at the roofline usually mean one thing: something is nesting in the warm gap under your array. We remove the animals humanely and install critter guard so they never get back under the panels. Serving Kane & McHenry County.

Why It Happens

Solar Panels Are Prime Real Estate for Wildlife

Rooftop solar has spread fast across Kane and McHenry County, and the wildlife noticed. The few inches between a panel and the shingles are warm, dry, shaded and completely protected from hawks and owls — a ready-made nursery. Squirrels move in ahead of their spring and fall litters; pigeons, sparrows and starlings nest under arrays year-round. Once one animal claims a roof, the scent invites the next, which is why a solar squirrel problem that gets ignored for a season often turns into a colony that has been there, as one of our customers put it, for a year.

The Risk

Chewed Wiring Is the Expensive Part

Squirrels are rodents — their teeth never stop growing and they chew constantly. Under an array, the closest thing to chew is your panel wiring. Stripped insulation can short the system, kill production and, in the worst case, start a roof fire. Nesting debris mats against the shingles and traps moisture, bird droppings corrode racking and connectors, and blocked drainage channels age the roof under the array years faster than the rest. The repair bill for chewed wiring alone routinely dwarfs the cost of removal and prevention.

Our Process

Remove, Exclude, Protect

We start with a roof and attic inspection to confirm what is living under the array and whether it has moved into the attic. Squirrels are live-trapped right on the roof and relocated; birds and nests are removed in line with federal migratory-bird rules. Then we install critter guard — a low-profile mesh skirt that clips to the panel frame around the full perimeter. No drilling, nothing penetrates the panels or racking, and your equipment warranty stays intact. The gap stays ventilated but nothing gets back underneath. We finish by clearing the nesting debris so moisture and droppings stop working on your roof.

FAQ

Solar Panel Wildlife Questions

Do repellents work?+

Not for long. A nesting female treats the space under your panels as home and returns right past sprays and ultrasonic gadgets. Removal plus critter guard mesh is the lasting fix.

Will critter guard void my panel warranty?+

No. The mesh clips to the panel frame without drilling, so the panels, racking and warranty are untouched.

How fast can you get here?+

We answer the phone and schedule promptly across Kane and McHenry County — usually within a day or two for roof inspections.

Which animals do you find under arrays?+

Mostly squirrels and pigeons, plus sparrows and starlings. If squirrels have moved from the panels into the attic, we handle that too.
