Raccoon Removal in Lake in the Hills, IL

Daytime chattering overhead or sod rolled back overnight can point to raccoons. Raccoon removal in Lake in the Hills then follows a set order, from inspection to sealed roofline, and village cart rules help keep the next one off your block.

Signs

Chattering by Day, a Bigger Hole, a Torn-Up Lawn

Raccoons give themselves away in three places. Overhead, it is often chattering or growling in the daytime. At the roofline, it is a hole chewed through the eaves, fascia or soffit. Small holes usually mean a squirrel; larger ones, a raccoon. In the yard, it is sod torn up overnight.

Homes along Willow Lake and Lake Scott sit on small residential lakes the village calls wildlife ponds. Raccoons turn up nearly anywhere food, water and shelter meet, so shoreline yards may see more night visitors.

The Process

What Happens, Step by Step

Step one is a free on-site inspection to map every opening and check for young. Then, once you’ve signed off in writing, traps go out. Each is tagged with the operator’s name and address and checked at least once each day. The goal is to bring mother and young out together.

Illinois sharply limits what a licensed operator can do with a trapped raccoon, and releasing it on another property is not one of the options. Our explainer on raccoon trapping law lays out the rules. A homeowner who wants to trap needs an Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) permit first.

Next, we seal every opening and put a written warranty on that exclusion work. IDNR advises capping a chimney once a family has used it as a den. Droppings and soiled insulation come last, through our attic restoration work.

Prevention

Make the Block Less Inviting

Village code says single-family homes must keep garbage, recycling and yard-waste carts at the side or rear of the house, or fully enclosed, except when set out for pickup. It is a solid-waste rule, not a wildlife law, but a cart inside a closed garage is out of a raccoon’s reach.

The village nuisance code also counts a garbage can without a tight cover as a nuisance. IDNR’s raccoon advice matches: metal or tough plastic containers with tight-fitting lids, pet food brought in at night, and no tree limbs hanging over the roof.

None of this removes a family already inside. Our main raccoon removal page walks through the full process. The other animals we handle are listed under Lake in the Hills wildlife removal. AquaText brings 25 years of wildlife work from its Hampshire base to Lake in the Hills and surrounding areas.

FAQ

Lake in the Hills Raccoon Questions

Can I set the garbage cart out the night before pickup?+

Yes, as long as it’s after noon the day before. That’s the earliest village code allows a cart at the curb. If raccoons are working your street, waiting until pickup morning keeps the cart off the curb overnight.

Something rolled back strips of our lawn overnight. Was that a raccoon?+

Quite possibly. IDNR documents lawns torn up by foraging raccoons, and adults feed at night. Skunks dig in lawns too, usually leaving small cone-shaped holes rather than rolled-back sod. Check the roofline and chimney for a fresh opening as well.

We hear them by day. Can we patch the hole while they’re out at night?+

Not yet. Adults go out at night, but young stay inside until almost weaned. Patch it with kits inside and the mother may rip open a new hole to get back to them. Leave it open and book the free inspection.

What will I be asked to sign before any trap goes out?+

Your written permission. Illinois rules require it from the landowner or tenant before a licensed operator takes wildlife on private property. The operator must also explain the types of methods to be used, and you get a receipt listing the services provided.
