Bat in the House? Do This First.
Close the doors, keep your eyes on the bat, and call. A single bat in your living space is the one thing Illinois law lets us remove any day of the year. Serving Kane, McHenry & Cook County for 25 years, we respond as fast as we can, often same day.
Three Steps Before We Arrive
Trap it in one room
Shut every interior door, open one window or exterior door, and dim the lights. Given a clear exit, many bats leave on their own within 20 minutes. Keep watching it, a bat you can see is a bat we can catch.
Never touch it barehanded
Bats are a rabies vector in Illinois. Do not swat it or pick it up, even if it looks docile. If anyone may have had contact, do not let it outside, it may need testing.
Clear kids, pets & sleepers
If the bat was in a room while someone slept, health officials treat it as a possible exposure. Call your county health department and a physician, then call us to contain the bat.
The Legal Part, Handled
Illinois bats are protected, extermination is illegal, and the only lawful fix for a colony is exclusion during the legal windows (Mar 15 to May 15 and Aug 5 to Oct 30). The exception that matters tonight: a lone bat inside your living space may be removed any day of the year. AquaText Inc. is IL DNR licensed and follows the rabies protocol without shortcuts. If we find a colony behind the stray, we book your exclusion for the moment the window opens.
