Opossum & Skunk Removal in Kane County, Illinois

Opossums and skunks settle in fast — under decks, in garages, near pets. We trap and relocate them humanely, then seal off the entry points so they don’t come back. Serving Kane, McHenry & Cook County.

The Problem

Why They Keep Coming Back

Opossums and skunks are non-aggressive but persistent. Once they’ve found shelter and food on your property, they don’t leave on their own.

🐕

Pet Encounters

A single skunk spray means days of cleanup — and direct contact with skunks can mean a rabies exposure event for your pet. Opossums can also bite when cornered.

🌱

Yard & Property Damage

Skunks dig cone-shaped holes in your lawn searching for grubs. Opossums raid garbage and pet food. Both leave waste under decks and near foundations.

🦠

Disease Risk

Skunks are a known rabies vector in Illinois. Opossums carry fleas, ticks, and leptospirosis. Neither should be approached, cornered, or handled without professional equipment.

Identification

Signs of an Intrusion

Both species are nocturnal and quiet, so most homeowners notice the secondary signs first — smells, damage, and disturbed garbage.

🦝

Opossum Signs

  • Overturned garbage cans or ransacked pet food
  • Hissing or clicking sounds at night near foundation
  • Five-toed tracks with thumb-like inner toe
  • Nesting material under decks or porches
  • Foul odor from droppings or deceased animal
🦨

Skunk Signs

  • Musky or sulfur odor in the yard, even without a spray event
  • Small, cone-shaped holes in the lawn (digging for grubs)
  • Pet comes in smelling of skunk spray
  • Skunks spotted at dusk near deck, shed, or foundation
  • Scratching or rustling under porch at night
Our Process

Trap. Relocate. Exclude.

Removal alone isn’t enough. Without sealing the entry points, another animal will move in within weeks.

01

Inspect

We locate the den site, identify the species, and assess access points before setting any traps.

02

Trap

Live traps appropriate to the species are placed strategically and checked regularly. Skunks are handled with techniques that minimize spray risk.

03

Relocate

Captured animals are relocated humanely in compliance with Illinois DNR regulations. We don’t just move the problem next door.

04

Exclude

Hardware cloth and professional materials seal off the access points under your deck, porch, or foundation. This is the step most people skip.

FAQ

Common Questions

Will a skunk spray when you trap it?+

It’s possible, but our trapping methods minimize the likelihood. Skunks typically spray as a last resort when they feel cornered. Our traps and removal process are designed to reduce stress on the animal. In most cases, removal goes smoothly.

Do opossums carry rabies?+

Opossums are remarkably resistant to rabies — their body temperature is too low for the virus to survive. That said, they do carry fleas, ticks, and leptospirosis. They can also bite if cornered, so don’t attempt to handle one yourself.

Can I just block off the deck myself once they’re gone?+

You can — but timing and method matter. If you seal before the animal has left, you’ve trapped it underneath. We confirm the animal is out before any exclusion work, and use materials that won’t fail. Hardware cloth, properly installed and buried at the perimeter, is the standard.

What time of year are they most active?+

Both are active year-round, though skunk activity noticeably increases in late winter and early spring when males are searching for mates — which is also when skunk odor complaints spike.

My pet was sprayed — what now?+

The most effective home remedy is a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap, applied before bathing with water. Do not use tomato juice. Most importantly: if your pet had direct contact with the skunk, contact your vet about rabies exposure.
